Jim Burns is president of HomeWord and the executive director of the HomeWord Center for Youth and Family at Azusa Pacific University. Jim speaks to thousands of people around the world each year. Doug Fields is the senior director of the HomeWord Center for Youth and Family at Azusa Pacific University. Doug has been a youth and teaching pastor at Mariners Church and Saddleback Church, and has authored over 50 books. My go-to book to give to engaged couples

My wife and I recently celebrated our first anniversary. And in the many books I read on marriage in the time leading up to that wonderful event (and the many books on marriage I’ve read since) (and the many books I read on marriage when in college, getting a minor in counseling), Getting Ready for Marriage by Jim Burns and Doug Fields is one of the best.

That’s a rather unwieldy endorsement, so let me say it clearer. I have a fascination with marriage and romance for a number of different reasons. Chief among these is that marriage has the potential to either be your greatest relationship or our most destructive. A good marriage results in positive intimacy, a closeness that is enjoyed, nurtured, and held in high regard. A poor marriage results in negative intimacy, a sort of forced togetherness where two people tolerate each other for the kids or the tax break.

Obviously, God intended for marriage to be mankind’s greatest human relationship. Obviously, a lot of marriages in our culture, even Christian marriages, have gone terribly wrong. Obviously, we need a way of preparing for marriage in such a way that lessens the shock of suddenly becoming one flesh with another person. And, at least right now, if I had to recommend one book only, it’d be Getting Ready for Marriage.

Getting Ready for Marriage is written as a Now-That-You’re-Engaged-Read-This type of book. It’s a practical step-by-step process that guides you in smoothing out the most common bumpy areas. Chapter 1 begins with whether or not you’re even ready for marriage. Hey, simply the fact you’ve cracked open the book is a good sign. Burns and Fields write that you should “plan a successful marriage, not just a beautiful wedding.”

From here, they move to a discussion about honestly writing your “marriage script.” No, that’s not your vows. We’re talking about hopes, dreams, goals, expectations, and so on. It’s the two becoming one aspect of it all. From the huge questions of Kids: How soon and how many? To the smaller questions with huge implications like Vacuuming: Who is going to do it?, Fields and Burns guide readers into intimate and honest conversation.

The chapters that follow take you through the potentially bumpy areas of In-Laws, Communication, Conflict, Finances, Sexuality, Spiritual Intimacy, and Remarriage. Each chapter weighs in at about 20 pages, so if you’re going through this as a part of premarital counseling, a chapter a week is easily doable. The final chapter offers helpful and practical tips on planning the wedding and ceremony.

As a pastor, this would be the first book I would give a newly engaged couple, whether they come to me for premarital counseling or are seeking it elsewhere.

Absolutely phenomenal, the way a Training resource SHOULD be written!!!!

I bought this NMAP Cookbook along with NMAP Network Scanning, the NMAP Official Book by the developer himself.

This is literally my first book review - never felt strong enough about any other book to warrant such comments before.

For those who want to learn sanitized, no-fluff, specifics on using NMAP - this nearly 200 page "NMAP Cookbook" is a must have, highly recommended resource for any IT/IS Systems Engineer, Administrator or especially Security Professional entering the field.

Having read the book in 2 days, you too should be using NMAP like a Pro within weeks.

Straight forward and right on target with generally Single Page contents highlighting NMAPs command sets, switches, features, options and then providing just the right amount of information without overkill.

Those who prefer lean, direct, point driven directions will probably appreciate this book, just like I do.

On each page, the Author supplies simple content such as;

- Command/Feature/Option,
- Summary of its purpose (generally a single sentence),
- Sample usage/syntax (exact commands, how a user should use it),
- Real world sample of both, the command itself and its anticipated results,
- More detailed of a description,
- At the bottom, to top it off, you'll likely encounter some "Tips" or "Notes" offering just the right amount of complementary insight.

Personally, this is the best instructional book on a Security Tool I have ever seen - and this from an evaluator with 20yrs of IT/IS experience too.

I completely and fully recommend this resource to everyone interested in learning NMAP, especially those wanting quick, efficient teachings.

NMAP in depth

I am a computer professional who uses nmap to scan my network for anomalies. Overall the book added to my knowledge of how to use nmap. I particularly found the following chapters useful:

Chapter 4: Advanced Scanning Options
Chapter 5: Port Scanning Options
Section 9: Output Options
Section 13: ndiff
Section 14: Tips and Tricks

The nmap cheat sheet is also very valuable and is available for download.

There was also excellent chapters on avoiding firewall and other topics that would be more interesting to those doing pentesting.

Basic but limited

The emphasis is on fat-free. There is not a lot of specifics or much detail. The entire book can be read in a matter of hours. It is clearly intended for those with very limited background in the subject matter. Anyone seeking to move beyond the simple basics will be highly disappointed. Just because the book is not a great resource for the professional does not mean that it lacks value, but the buyer should be aware that the book will not provide deep answers or lead the reader to professional knowledge on network scanning or even on the use of NMAP as a scanner, but they will be introduced to the fundamental uses of the program and to network scanning in general.

About the Author
Floyd J. Fowler, Jr. is a graduate of Wesleyan University and received a PhD from the University of Michigan in 1966. A Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Survey Research at the University of Massachusetts Boston since 1971, he was Director of the Center for 14 years. Dr. Fowler is the author or co-author of four textbooks on survey methods, including Survey Research Methods, Improving Survey Questions, Standardized Survey Interviewing (with Mangione), and Survey Methodology (with Groves, Couper, Lepkowski, et. al), as well as numerous research papers and monographs. His recent work has focused on studies of question design and evaluation techniques and applying survey methods to studies of medical care.

Classic book with timeless advice

After reaading many books on questionnaires, I find this one provides the most generally useful advice in a readable, compact format. Much cheaper and more advanced than the Survey Kit (also published by Sage), Fowler's book should find a place on the bookshelf of anyone writing questionnaires or surveys.

Very interesting and helpful book, makes you think a lot about the questions you ask and forces you to think of what you are really trying to get out of the answer. Would like more questions the ones used in the examples were very basic and easy to understand.

Short, sharp, effective. Dr Fowler covers it all.

The author has been a senior research fellow since 1971, and in that time has no-doubt seen it all when it comes to marketing and social research projects. In fact the volume was written after an evaluation of many significant social surveys where (he wasn't setting out to prove this) Fowler found the standard of questionnaire writing quite inadequate.

In "Improving Survey Questions" he goes methodically through the philosophy, the problems and the techniques of writing better, more reliable questions that are easily understood (by a diverse audience) and are easily responded to - thanks to clear, unambiguous instructions.

If he has one main lesson it is this: pre-test your surveys. His ultimate wish is that more pre-testing take place in the world of professional research.

A worthwhile book - not exactly entertaining in style - but would make a great basis for in-house training in your organisation. I refer to my copy frequently, and used it to strip down my questionnaire style and build it up again from scratch. A good if somewhat salutary exercise for the professional.

Very True, Very Real

I could really relate to this book. Up until four months ago, for the previous seven years, I was the General Counsel of a medium sized publishing company. Our company was backed by Private Equity, and a large part of my role was mergers and acquisitions. During that time I interacted with more investment bankers, bankers, and money fund managers than I could possibly remember. Prior to that I worked for a couple of years in the M&A group of a Fortune 500 publishing company, and prior to that I spent 20 years in government and large law firms.

I have never personally met Jonathan Knee, at least not that I remember, but my company danced and flirted several times with his current company. I knew people at pretty much every boutique publishing investment bank in New York. So, while I didn't work as an insider at an investment banking firm, I've been as close as you can get. And this books is absolutely dead on accurate both in its historical perspective as well as its view of what life is like inside the investment banking industry.

Knee comes across as somewhat conflicted. He obviously likes the money and maybe the prestige of investment banking, but he knows that investment banking has a side that is ugly and corrupt. He wants to continue in the industry, but he also wants to expose its faults. As a consequence sometimes the book waffles. For example, he criticizes Mary Meeker and defends her at the same time. He clearly does not want to burn any bridges.

He accurately captures the sense of power and feeling of doing something important that comes from investment banking. In particular the satisfaction of advising CEOs and seeing ones advice taken. Based on my own experience, in the world as it is today, the feeling of doing something important can be much more tangible when working with big business than working in the government as he notes.

Still, he longs for a different time when relationship investment banking was the heart of the business. I have the sense that if one were really to talk with him heart to heart that his awareness of the corruption runs deeper than he is willing to fully disclose in this book. In part I think this is the reason some of the reviewers here were disappointed with the book. However, I also think the palpably conflicted nature of his feelings ultimately makes this book more interesting, if less of a simple entertainment.

If you are looking for a rollicking but superficial account of the investment banking world, along the lines of Liar's Poker, this is not the book. If you are looking for a deep historical analysis of the growth of investment banking, along the lines of something written by Ron Chernow, this is not the book. But as a thoughtful insiders account with good historical perspective, this is an excellent book

Stay on Story

As an I-Banker at a regional firm I always enjoy reading books such as this. This is a mixed bag. Knee starts the book discussing his internship in London, what a "rookie" does, what he did well, what he did not do well, and why he didn't want to do this forever. But, after an MBA and a short career with an airline, he's back at it again, and with success. He "accidentally" fell into a role and used his wit to carve out a successful niche. This is where this book is at its best and an excellent, fast read.

Unfortunately, it's not quite a full book and Knee feels the need to regurgitate a past history of Goldman Sachs, the excellent firm for which he works. This is where the book slows down and is totally out of character with the title. Given I had just read "Goldman Sachs: Culture of Success" written by Lisa Endlish to whom he refers liberally, this was really of no interest to me.

Finally, we're back to his career change to Morgan Stanley in New York and now have a new problem, the total collapse of deals where bankers earn their money. This is quite interesting also. As I-bankers will attest, the business becomes ruthless with inter-fighting as everyone grabs for the few crumbs of income, people must be let go and mansions and egos must be protected.

Overall, I love the book and I'd rather he had shortened the book and stayed on subject instead of spending 30% of time on a history lesson before jumping back to his career. So, be forewarned, it's good with a twist.

The Accidental Investment Banker (the "AIB") has been compared with Liar's Poker, and surely readers who enjoyed the latter will also enjoy the AIB. But in some respects the comparison is unfair to the AIB, because as it is not only a quick and amusing story of Wall St in the '90s, but a serious analysis of a transformative decade in investment banking. As an attorney who participated in the process on the periphery, I can testify that Knee understands the key economic, business and regulatory trends and knows the"trophy" bankers who shaped decade, and the culture of their firms. The AIB is a great read for anyone on the Street (or in the "City," for that matter), anyone in the "codependent" professions (lawyers and consultants), MBA candidates and those contemplating it, and anyone who enjoys Wall St. as a spectator sport.

DAISY GOODWIN is the author of the New York Times bestselling novels The American Heiress and The Fortune Hunter. She is a Harkness Scholar who attended Columbia University's film school after earning a degree in history at Cambridge University, and was Chair of the judging panel of the 2010 Orange Prize for Fiction. The creator and screenwriter of the Masterpiece presentation Victoria on PBS, she lives in London.

A glimmering coming-of-age story of one of the most famous women in history

Most know her for her long-lived, powerful rule over Great Britain, but very few know her story outside of the monarchy. Victoria is a dazzling glimpse of Queen Victoria not only during her reign; rather, it covers the four-year timespan before she ever thought to ascend throne, to her first few years in.

There's a really interesting dynamic between the struggle for power that surrounds young Alexandrina (Victoria's birth name), as well as her hard-earned path to ascension. A great player in this is Lord Melbourne, Victoria's closest friend and confidante upon King William IV's death—unusual because he was 40 years her senior—who would go on to be a hugely successful mentor in Victoria's most critical years. Goodwin portrays him as a charismatic, hard-to-figure-out character, and I loved the ambiguous but wholly intriguing relationship between him and Victoria.

Victoria is also highly empowering; I loved reading about the obstacles she faced just for being a female ruler, and how she overcame them. Who would have thought, in 1837, that such a small girl, hardly a woman at eighteen, would end up ruling the world?

While well researched, this novel isn't bogged down with facts or a timeline of events that usually makes historical fiction difficult for me. It felt like a natural story, specifically about Victoria's development in her teenage years and early adulthood. It portrays the Queen in a relatable, human light—a perspective I've never seen before, and appreciate extremely. This is a very approachable account of the more intimate details of Victoria's life; Anglican history buffs and romance lovers alike will really enjoy this.

Pros: Story flows well and the ending is satisfying // Many points of rising action and tension // Well-fleshed characters: Victoria is easy to sympathize with and Lord Melbourne is fascinating // A great historical perspective of an endearing character

Cons: Some parts are melodramatic (not that they're overly dramatic, but the characters just act really scandalized over the smallest things) // I wish the subplot with Victoria's domineering mother had been more developed in the latter half of the book

Verdict: Less of an all-encompassing biopic and more of a glimmering coming-of-age story of one of the most powerful female rulers in history, Victoria is a historical drama that paints a vivid picture of the Queen's earliest, most transformative years. Daisy Goodwin is a natural storyteller; lovers of all things British Royalty will eat this book up. Equal parts political examination and budding romance, it left me thinking: What a beautiful novel. If you're curious about Queen Victoria as a person rather than just her political roles, go pick this up immediately.

Rating: 7 out of 10 hearts (3.5 stars): Not perfect, but overall enjoyable; would recommend, but borrow a copy before you buy!

Abbreviated account when compared to PBS/BBC series

Usually a movie or series does not or cannot cover all the material in the source novel. That is not the case here. If you have not seen the series, you will find this novel enjoyable enough. But if you have seen it, there is little expounded on here, if anything. The series follows the book when dealing with Victoria's life upstairs almost verbatim. The intrigue that occurs with the downstairs staff in the series is nonexistent here and makes me believe it was added to the series to appeal to the Downton Abbey fans. Further, this book covers only the first four episodes of the series, so if you were wanting more after viewing it, you will be sorely disappointed.

I would recommend this novel only if you have no intention of viewing the series.

Victoria - Daisy Goodwin's Newest Novel!!

Daisy Goodwin's latest novel, Victoria, which released November 22nd, is most definitely a must-read!! This book vividly brings to life the story of Alexandrina Victoria as she matures from a young girl into a woman facing the trials, tribulations, and joys of life, all while ruling a great nation...England. It's based during the 19th century with amazing attention to detail allowing you to visualize this wonderful novel as you read it! It opens to Alexandrina hearing the news that her uncle, William IV, has died and the ruling of England falls to her responsibility and she has some big decisions to make at eighteen years of age. So this beautiful and well written novel follows her life from that point through the 63 years that she rules as the Queen of England as well as the delightful love story between her and Lord Melbourne, her Prime Minister! Again, this novel is beautifully written, vividly detailed and flows smoothly-my idea of the perfect book! If you haven't gotten your hands on Daisy Goodwin's latest....Victoria, you're missing out on a great fictional novel!
