About the Author
Dr. Ramin Esfandiari is a professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at California State University, Long Beach, where he has served as a faculty member since 1989. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and M.A. and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (Optimal Control), all from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has authored several refereed research papers in high quality engineering and scientific journals, including Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Optimal Control Applications and Methods, and ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics. Dr. Esfandiari is the author of Numerical Methods for Engineers and Scientists Using MATLAB�, CRC Press, 2013; Modeling and Analysis of Dynamic Systems (with Dr. Bei Lu), 2nd edition, CRC Press, 2013; Matrix Analysis and Numerical Methods for Engineers, Atlantis, 2007; MATLAB� Manual for Advanced Engineering Mathematics, Atlantis, 2007; Springer Handbook of Mechanical Engineering, Chapter 1, Springer-Verlag, 2009; Dynamic Systems: Modeling and Analysis (with Dr. Hung Vu), McGraw-Hill, 1997. Accessible Version of Engineering Mathematics

This text is written for the junior or senior undergraduate or for the graduate student who must take a math course. The book includes:

1) Ordinary Differential Equations

2) Partial Differential Equations and Fourier Analysis

3) Linear Algebra

4) Complex Analysis

5) Probability and Statistics

There are several attractive qualities to this book:

First, the author seems to understand that engineers use math as a tool and he integrates physical phenomena into the problems where this is appropriate.

Second, there are no mathematical proofs in the book. Engineers do not worry about why something works mathematically. Mathematics is a tool used to solve a physical problem. In the words of the electrical engineer Oliver Heaviside when he found out that mathematicians did not approve of his use of new notation to solve differential equations he said "I do not have to know how my digestive system works in order to enjoy a good meal". His answer is entirely appropriate today.

This is not to suggest that the book lacks rigor; rather it is written by an engineering professor who understands what his students need from a math text book. If you are math purist, this book is not for you. If you like worked problems, this book will help you.

Third, you do not need to have a copy of MATHCAD, MATLAB, MAPLE or the like to read this book and get something from it. Many of the other major engineering math texts actively integrated these popular programs into their texts. While this may seem like a good idea, I do not agree with it. In an exam situation, you will not have MATLAB, MAPLE, or MATHCAD to help you solve the problems. You will have to use your brain and all of the timeless engineering skills (such as your ability to know what is most important and what you can ignore). These skills are better learned with paper and pencil because this forces you to learn what you are doing and to stop yourself from making elementary mistakes.

Too many engineering math textbooks use computer programs as a crutch. I often ask younger engineers what happens when the power goes out to their laptop or the batteries in their calculator (capable of performing symbolic algebraic computation) goes out. I often get blank stares.

While I have nothing against MATHCAD, MATLAB, MAPLE, or any other fine computational product, they are only tools that are supposed to help you.

Forth, the book does not have any "fluff" in it (such as biographical notes or little introductions to "motivate" the subject matter) that pad the page count but offer the student (who has to perform on exams) any real insight. If I want to read about math giants like Euler, Newton, Laplace, etc. I can go to the library and read about them. These things do not help me pass exams or learn the material. The author rightly puts his time into working examples.

The only improvement I would recommend is the inclusion of material on the Z transform in the book to make it useful for the electrical engineer. While there are some electrical models discussed in the book, many of the examples come from mechanical engineering. I suspect that this stems from the author's background as a mechanical and aerospace instructor. However, I would argue that even mechanical engineers need some background with the Z transform as it is used in a variety of mechanical platforms (real time data acquisition from machinery is but one area and modern control systems that are completely digital is another area).

About the Author
Mooji Anthony Paul Moo-Young, known as Mooji, was born on January 29, 1954 in Port Antonio, Jamaica. In 1969, he moved to the UK and presently resides in Brixton, London. He worked in London`s `West end` as a street portrait artist for many years, then as a painter and a stained glass artist, and later as a teacher at Brixton College. For a long time, he was well-known as Tony Moo, but is now affectionately known as Mooji by the many seekers and friends who visit him. Mooji is a direct disciple of Sri Harilal Poonja (or Papaji as he is lovingly called by his followers), the renowned Aadvaita master. Since 1999, Mooji has been sharing satsang in the form of spontaneous encounters, retreats, satsang intensives and one-to-one meetings with seekers who visit him, from all parts of the world, in search of the direct experience of truth. Few amongst the modern teachers of the Advaita tradition expound the `knowledge of Self`, and the method of self-enquiry, with such dazzling clarity, love and authority. He also travels regularly to Ireland, Spain, Italy, Germany, Brasil, North America and India where he is ever open to meeting sincere seekers of truth, whatever their background. He is also the author of Before I Am.

I was sad to see no reviews here for the longest time. This message has become essential to the quality of my life. I have been studying spirituality for years(in spite of the futility of striving), such as the course in miracles, Eckhart Tolle and Adyashanti amongst most everything else out there; occultism, toltequity, Sikhism, zen, etc.. If you have a good teaching, you can save yourself lots of trouble doing mental gymnastics in the non-event of mind. Mooji's words are fresh from the source and represent for me the bottom line. He will cut through whatever bs you are carrying and lead you into a direct experience of self. He has many videos on Youtube, take a look.

As Expected of Mooji

As I expected, this turned out to be a great book from Mooji. For those of you who do not know of him, Mooji is a teacher of non-duality philosophy of India (but practised in various form all over the world) out of UK. He is a true master of self-realization who speaks in an unambiguous way and without the clap-trap of pretentious pseudo-scientific jargon or psycho-babble so loved by many of the followers of this simple from-the -heart experiantial philosophy. If you can't get it after reading this, you can try Ramana Maharshi or Nisargadatta Maharaj directly. If that doesn't work, save your money and stop buing more books on this subject and instead have a bottle of tequila! It might even have a recycle refund value to it!

Excellent Book on APA Style

I have a Masters Degree in Psychology and am currently a Doctoral Candidate in Special Education, so the fact that all my papers are required to be in APA format is not a problem to me. I was required, however, to purchase this book for my next course, and I must say that it is a perfect adjunct to the APA Manual. Every so often, I will forget a piece of necessary information that might seem insignificant, but is of importance. In this book, I can easily look up the particular item that I've forgotten/blanked on momentarily, or on which I just want to refresh my understanding, and find what I want in the Table of Contents. There is, unfortunately, no index so one must find the topic in the Contents section. I am not too thrilled about that but for the fact that the Contents section is fairly detailed. What I really like about this book, however, is that it gives examples of correct and incorrect usages, and the information that is being corrected is highlighted in gray. The book gives two sets of examples on one sentence, or form; one is called the draft version which is always the incorrect form, and the other is called the feedback version which is the corrected form. This goes into everything from correct comma usage to not showing bias in writing, so there are many important subjects that are covered. There are also tests which give not only the answer key, but also the exact APA code that governs the correct answer. This is especially helpful. The only thing I find confusing is a personal matter, and that is that I teach high school students who have learning disabilities and I teach them MLA formatting. The two styles do differ, and I tend, on occasion, to make the error of using MLA when I need to use APA in my own reports. Nothing huge such as formatting the References section wrong, but the occasional difference of whether to use Italics or quotation marks--well I guess that could be a big error. This workbook will, I believe, cement the APA format firmly into my mind. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who must employ proper APA styling. BTW, I bought the spiral bound version, a bit worried about the quality of the paper and whether it would easily tear, but my fears are unfounded. The paper is of good enough quality that I don't believe this will be a problem. I do wish it came in a hard cover version, always my first choice in a book to which I may be referring in the future.

Mastering APA Style.

The book was good but not great. Amazon did a great job of delivering the material, but the book wasn't what I though it would be. I am currently in my third graduate program. I like most of the student I know would like a book that is easy to navigate and find answers in. Both the mastering style and the APA 6th edition leave a lot to be desired.
