Different physically and behaviorally from the more common bottle-nosed variety, pink dolphins are hard to observe as they swim low and never leap out of the water. As the adventure proceeds, readers encounter all kinds of plant and animal life, meet a couple of scientists, and learn how observation leads to understanding. They see how children in this part of the world live, hear a folktale about an encantado, travel back through time to discover the animal's ancient origins, and glimpse the future of the Amazon as the forests are destroyed. Spanish and Portuguese words and phrases are occasionally integrated into the text. Hand-drawn colorful maps and a time line illustrate habitat and history, and there are a wealth of features at the back, including an annotated list for further reading, information on making a similar trip, statistics, odd facts, and unsolved mysteries. The author's sense of wonder at this spectacular environment and this unusual animal is infectious and makes for a nonfiction title that inspires as it informs.

Gr. 5-8. Naturalist Montgomery traveled to South America to satisfy her curiosity about the mysterious pink dolphins called encantado, or "enchanted." She met with locals and experts to gather information, and she made several valiant efforts to locate the encantado herself. In the end, however, the creatures remained elusive. (In fact, the only clear photos of an encantado are of a dolphin in a Pittsburgh zoo.) So, instead of a traditional animal study, children are treated to a captivating travelogue, complete with numerous color photos of the people and places that incorporates political, environmental, and zoological aspects of the region. The transition from topic to topic may be a challenge for some readers, and some will find Montgomery's use of the second person odd ("Your canoe is stuck in the treetops! Bet you didn't think that would be a problem when you left the United States"). But children with a taste for adventure will enjoy this enthusiastic field trip to the rainforest and chance meetings with everything from cute monkeys to stinging black ants. Randy Meyer

Encantardo: The Amazing Pink River Dolphin

Last year when I when I was planning to go to the Amazon, I read Journey of the Pink Dolphins: An Amazon Quest by Sy Montgomery. It was an adult documentary about the author's journey in search of the Amazonian pink river dolphin. I not only enjoyed the book, but I fell in love with this amazing creature.

When I found Encantado: Pink Dolphin of the Amazon by the same author, I had a certain expectation that I would be in for a treat. I was not disappointed. Encantardo captures the essence of adventure, nature, and the illusive habits of the boto rosa, as the natives or Indios call the pink dolphin.

This picture book, clearly geared to young people, is one that will enthrall adults as well. I loved the format, the photographs, and the information. I thought I knew a great deal about botos, especially after my own experiences of swimming with them in the wild, but I learned many new things from this book. The pictures are wonderful. I know from my own attempts that capturing a photo, never mind more than a glimpse, of a pink dolphin is difficult.

What I particularly liked about Encantado was the author's obvious enthusiasm for her subject. What makes this book special is that she is able to translate her enthusiasm to the written work and invite the reader to become involved in caring about and safeguarding this extraordinary animal and the phenomenal rainforest that allows it to survive.

I would recommend this book to families, children and adults, who love wildlife and who have a respect and love for the environment. I think that many young people would become excited to learn that pink dolphins exist, that they are very intelligent, and that they are part of an ecosystem that is unique and necessary to the rest of the world. When readers learn that the lives of these remarkable creatures are in danger, I think they will be glad to find resources in this book that help direct them toward solutions.

Good For All Ages

I had no idea pink dolphins existed so when I saw this book I thought it was just a children's book and was very pleased when I started reading and looking thorugh the pages.

It is a perfect book to share with children, my daughter loves it. The words and photographs set forth a great message about our world around us and the environment so it is educational and fun at the same time.

There is enough there to teach adults some things - as I said I had nno idea about pink dolphins and that was just one of the things the book revealed.

Very enjoyable and highly recommended.

This is a marvelous book for your kid, your nephew or niece, your grandchild.
Full of the excitement of discovery and the adventure of investigating a little-known creature in a dazzlingly diverse and mysterious rainforest world.
A fun read, and packed with great facts kids will want to learn and share. More than facts, though, the book gets across the idea that the young reader CAN be an explorer, CAN be a scientist, and CAN help save the rainforest. Every kid should read this, and it would make a great addition to grade school curricula.

Excellent story line and lovely pictures! Educators and parents are constantly on the lookout for ways to enourage a positive self image in youngsters. This book does that. I liked the author's explanaton
about the whole family being involved in tending their wealth-the sheep!
Just the kind of story our little ones (both girls and boys)need to help them relate to the Christmas story!

Grade 5-7-In this introductory survey, Panchyk describes major events throughout the great conflict in nearly every theater of operation. While the main focus is on America's part in the war, life in England and other European countries is given careful attention. A special aspect of this work is the variety of informative activities appearing in substantial sidebars. Through them, readers can vicariously go on a reconnaissance mission, grow a victory garden, track a ship's movements using latitude and longitude, live on rations for a day, and experience other aspects of wartime life. Adult help and/or permission is suggested for many of the projects. One involves labeling alternate halves of a class of students with special armbands and simulating discrimination; teacher involvement is not mentioned in the instructions. Summarized or quoted first-person accounts by World War II participants are integral parts of this book, which also includes letters and journal entries by soldiers and civilians in both Allied and Axis countries. A large selection of black-and-white contemporary photographs and reproductions of such items as ration stamps and propaganda posters further contribute to the book's immediacy. Attention grabbers are a letter from former President Clinton, a short foreword by Senator John S. McCain, and an afterword by World War II veteran Senator Ernest "Fritz" Hollings.
