Booth, a London publisher who has taught philosophy and theology at Oxford, is not shy about what he expects from readers—he asks that they enter into an imaginative exercise and embrace a world in which the basic facts of history can be interpreted in a way which is almost completely the opposite of the way we normally understand them. That radical re-interpretation is based on the tenets offered in the secret teachings of Rosicrucians, esoteric Freemasonry, Sufism and Kabbalism, among others, with additional references to Eastern religions and Greek and Roman mythology. According to Booth, these teachings inspire the cosmic mind that brought into being the material universe. Booth's history incorporates so many disparate philosophies, many of them far, far away from the mainstream, that it lacks all coherence. And his universe is full of bizarre theories, entertaining primarily for their weirdness. For example, he posits that the angels in the ancient Hebrew Book of Enoch who became sexually attracted to human women are none other than the Gods of Olympus. Undeniably entertaining, but lacking in footnotes!

I have always been interested in European mysticism and Secret Societies. However, the literature in such areas seems to either range from being so dense and Academic that it is unreadable to being little more than some New Age guru's quickly written and poorly researched little promotional piece. If such societies are really that secretive or didn't really exist at all, this book is nothing more than a complete lie from beginning to end, but what a wonderfully creative and mind opening tale it is. Real or imagined (and what do we all truly know for sure anyway), this text is just outright fun and thought provoking. I bought the paperback version and have read it previously. It is now on my kindle, and I often return to it again and again. If you, in fact, believe that the Soul and the Imagination are one and the same, I would say that this text lives up to that in so many ways. Call me strange, but I find my houseplants reaching out toward the bed where I sleep now. Perhaps, we all were once plant material as the myths presented here suggest. On the other hand, isn't the power of all religion in the metaphor and not something that can be seen in concrete form?

if your a natural skeptic like me or interested in the occult you may be ...

Whether true or untrue, imagine if the world was as is described in this book. Are the claim extraordinary? Yes. However, if your a natural skeptic like me or interested in the occult you may be amazed by the complex, ambitious, and sometimes sinister agenda secret societies and religion are described to be in the book. This idea of religion having ulterior motives and hidden agendas is not knew, but this book's speculation about what those motives are is SO different then anything you have probably heard or thought of. Definitely worth a read for it's capacity to expand your imagination.
