Jeffery A. Cole has been teaching mathematics and computer science at Anoka-Ramsey Community College since fall 1981. He started working on the Swokowski series of precalculus texts in 1985 as an ancillary author, and has been a co-author since 1991. His contribution to the Swokowski texts also includes joining the revision team of the calculus text in 1989.

Wouldn't take pre-calc without it

All of the odd problems worked out, step by step.

The formatting isn't pretty, but I don't care.

I used this book (11th edition), with my 12th edition text book. Out of my assigned homework, I found only two problems that were different between the two.

A Must Have book!

I am an adult returning to collage at 59. As you may imagine and higher math training I received has long been forgotten. The fast pace teaching was leaving me without a clue as to what I needed to do in this course. While the text book had answers to the odd questions, with out an explanation of how they were obtained they weren't much use. When I went to school way back then we didn't study algebra, so I wasn't up to speed in the subject as were the younger students just out of high school. This companion to the text book has the odd answers and how they were done, along with explanations. If you are having a hard time you need this book.

The solutions manual is helpful yet can be confusing bcause the manual teaches you the long way which could sometimes prove to be confusing. It is best to understand the formulas first and then use the manual as a cross check to verify that the final solution is correct.

There are guides, and then there are guides

I bought this book while preparing for a trip to Syria, as the Lonely Planet had mentioned it in high esteem. While it is a great source of info, and does have some suggested itineraries, it is more of an index than a guide.
Not that this is any kind of fault, but I would have liked to know this while planning my book purchases. Until the Blue Guides add Syria to their line, this is a usable substitute. That is to say plan on using another guide (e.g. Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Footprints, etc) for info on getting around and where to eat and sleep. The latter applies to the Blue Guides series as well, and is not meant as a criticism.
One thing offsetting this book's usefulness, was it's poor print quality. We found the text blurry enough to cause headaches even for those who don't wear glasses, and the photos in the color section are only a bit better. On the chance I'd simply gotten a bad copy, I'd later checked a copy in a local bookstore, and it was similar. Not the kind of thing for reading while bouncing around on a bus on your way to a site, but has some through background on Syria's rich archaeological treasures.
The only other real fault this book has is the complete lack of Arabic script. Having your destination in the local script at which to point is always a plus when trying to get around anywhere, even if you can't read a syllable yourself. If you don't think that this is important, ask yourself "How many times have I had language difficulties with cab Drivers (et al) in my own country?"
If you are traveling light, and looking for only one book to take as both travel guide and through history background, I would recommend Footprints' Syria Guide. If you like your history in briefer doses, look to the Lonely Planet or Rough Guides.

For many years I led many tours in many countries, amongst them, Syria. Years later, at a party here in Swaziland, I was talking to this guy who mentioned that he had been in Syria, too; in fact, he was writing a guide book on the subject. One of the many magic, even if almost unknown, places in Syria is the early Christian pilgramage city of Al Rosafa. Ross was kind enough to fax me an excerpt from his book, covering that walled desert city. Quite simply, I haven't read anything as good before or since, and don't expect to. If the rest turns out to be as good - serious or armchair travellers alike - get this book: it will be an Alladin's cave!

A stupendous book!

Having lived and worked in Damascus for two years, I must say that this book is in a league of its own. In Syria it is a respected work. The number of monuments covered by the author, along with the historical expertise he displays, are very impressive. Entries for each site are thoroughly referenced, listing possible alternative names in Arabic, the historical period to which the ruins belong, and directions about how to get to them (these generally assume you have a vehicle and do not give much info about shared taxis).

As this is an historical guide, there is no information regarding hotels and accommodation. It is therefore vital that you complement it with another guidebook (footprints probably remains the best). In any case, don't be afraid of getting stuck somewhere as the Syrians are wonderful people who are always ready to help you out.

I wouldn't hesitate to say that reading this book constituted an education in itself. It certainly allowed me to discover a fascinating country whose history is often overlooked and poorly understood. No wonder there aren't that many other historical guides to Syria on the market!

In this book, Glendening shows how, by intermixing past and present, fact and fiction,�neo-Victorian narratives, with a few instructive exceptions, manifest this pattern.

Good Reference along with Introductory Info

I had worked with XSLT for some time when I purchased this book. I needed something to help me move to the next level. This book provided a lot of help to improve XSLT scripts I wrote. The book is relatively large compared to other cookbooks I've used (over 700 pages) which means it is full of good recipes.

I expected this book to be a cookbook and, as such, have solutions to common problems. It definitely offers that. It has a good structure that includes recipes for discrete problems such as string and date/time manipulation. It also has recipes for advanced composite scenarios such as XML to SVG, code generation, and extending XSLT.

One of my favorite aspects of this book is that it provides some foundational, introductory information as well. It's not *just* a cookbook. There is a chapter dedicated to XPath as well as chapters on Testing, Debugging, and Functional Programming. This is excellent for those who both want to advance their skills from beginner or from intermediate.

I think XSLT is an often overlooked yet powerful tool and I rely on this book to help me with XSLT generation. It has been useful in many scenarios such as customizing SharePoint data views, converting XML data to XHTML for display, modifying 3rd-party-generated XML for saving and restoring in custom situations, and for streamlining data storage. And this book has helped me with all of that.

For Experienced XLST users, as a reference and to get ideas.

This book is for the experienced XSLT developer. It will provide many, many code samples right from the beginning. I purchased this book thinking I can learn XSLT but, this book is not for the beginner. With that, I am not saying you should not purchase it. What I am saying is that I found a very good companion book: XSLT FOR DUMMIES. Believe it or not, this was my first for dummies book. Don't let the title fool you, this is a great first book to understand XSLT. I think the cookbook will start you where the dummies book ends but with a very different approach: To give you ideas. From the dummies book, you will understand what XPath and other key topics which you will already need to understand for the cookbook. For example, the cookbook goes right to covering XPATH in chapter one but assumes you know what and how it works. I hope this review will help everyone understand what this book will do for you and the correct approach in using it.

Having twenty years of experience in programming, but being a novice with XSL, I needed help on a project. I purchased this book for its title, hoping to gleam examples that may assist with what I needed. I was not disappointed! This book is filled with example XSL transformation code! But, buyer beware! This book is for developers with knowledge of XSLT. If you need to learn the language, then purchase the XSLT for Dummies book, it is quite competent in it's content. (I did.) But for what the title indicates it is, then it is a fantastic purchase! I highly recommend this book, as it saved me through the project I was assigned.
