From Booklist
In the backroom of a Manhattan restaurant, four men gather to discuss their tales of heartbreak. Ian Bainbridge, the psychologist who brought them together, takes copious notes with the intent of writing a book. He uses the men even as he tries to heal them. Meanwhile, Detective Voort of the NYPD is investigating the bludgeoning death of a fortyish female poet-waitress. Voort, heir to a large fortune and a cop by choice as well as heritage, is struggling with his own love life: Camilla, a TV producer, has left him to explore her inability to commit. As the killer leaves more victims in his wake, Voort begins to see a pattern and, to his horror, realizes that Camilla may be at risk. The first thriller by journalist Black will keep readers off balance as they bounce from Voort to Bainbridge to Camilla a half-dozen times before the connections become clear. The suspense builds, the sex is steamy, and the conclusion is dramatic. This has all the elements of a best-seller and the style, too. Strongly recommended. Wes Lukowsky

From the Back Cover

"Black lowers his reader down into the darkly twisted tunnels of the serial killer's mind and then leads us breathlessly through the confrontations. . . . A genuinely clever tale."
--PAUL LINDSAY
Author of Witness to the Truth

"[A] WELL-PACED PSYCHO-THRILLER DEBUT . . . Black fashions some terrific dialogue and keeps the scenes rolling in punchy succession. The iconoclastic Voort could well augur the advent of a sexy, savvy, highly charismatic new icon in popular crime fiction."
--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"THRILLING, ULTRA-HIP, AND COMPLETELY ENGROSSING."
--Mademoiselle

Okay but. . .
By A Customer
This book has a decent premise, and I love the detective character, but it needs some work.
First of all, I agree with one previous reviewer -- the "secret" of the book is revealed literally half-way through the read (way too soon). This makes every move by the detective and other characters look so stupid it's not even funny. You really want to like the detective, but after reading him do some really dense things, you lose interest.
I also have a fundamental problem with the book and it's secret. I think the author really needed to get himself a better editor, because there are many inconsistencies that need to be resolved.
Speaking of editing, the book is chock full of poor grammar and missed/mis-used punctuation.
I'd wait for the next book or if you want to read a thriller, get Mark of the Assassin by Silva or something like that.

Not Recommended
By L. J. Roberts
This is a book whose premise had potential to be a suspenseful, gripping novel. However, none of that potential is realized. Instead, it is badly written, filled with graphic sex and descriptions of the wealth Voort and his well-to-do partner. I found myself not caring about any of the characters. There's a twist in the middle that makes reading the rest of the book almost irrelevant. I'm always looking for new authors to add to my reading list. Based on this, Black isn't going to be one of them.

just plain bad psychology
By David Group
This novel is not particularly distinguished-- the characters and settings are a bit too generic-- but what really got to me was the psychology. It is just bad. The details of the mental disorder that the killer suffers from are straight from a bad made-for-TV movie and have no relation to reality at all. He even gets the name wrong, using a distorted form of the old label for this disorder. To me, a good novel must first and foremost have decent psychology behind it, or else it doesn't work. Even comic book and fantasy stories must be grounded in good psychology in order to work and create a connection to the reader. To fudge on this undermines the story in a big way. Maybe he could have gotten away with this if he had gone into the mind of the killer a little more, but he doesn't, probably so he could create some half-hearted red herrings in the first half of the novel.
Also, what I found even more bizarre than the events in the book was a three-page interview at the end between the author and his fictional detective (!?!?!?). If an author wants to generate interest in a character, why not do it in the context of the novel itself? Thumbs down for me.

Alexander The Great: A Gayish Biography, by William Arnett PhD.

“Alexander was only defeated once…and that was by Hephaestion’s thighs.”

-- Cynic Philosophers, about 2,000 years ago

In this hilarious and meticulously researched biography, Humanities professor and sometime standup comic Dr. Will Arnett reveals the truth about Alexander: The greatest military hero of all time was also the biggest drama queen who ever lived.

He’s Here, He’s Queer And He Doesn’t Like Your End Tables.
From Hephastion, his boyfriend of 19 years to Bagoas, his shatteringly beautiful Persian boy toy, Alexander The Great ruled as a king but lived as a queen. He conquered most of the known world, unified it with a common language, imbued it with religious tolerance, and enriched it with racial diversity. He founded close to 70 cities across Turkey, Asia, Central Europe and the Middle East.

Yet he cried easily. He threatened suicide if he didn’t get his way. He talked in exclamation marks! He loved to wear outrageous clothes. Everything was an emergency. He could throw hissy fits that would take Liza Minelli’s breath away. And he was so vain his own officers rubbed Preparation H on his ego. It’s the interplay between his personal fabulousness and his public greatness that makes Alexander the Great one of the most exhilarating characters in world history.

And so ripe for comedy.

As over-the-top as Alexander could be, he was no Liberace in fatigues. If you’re thinking Sean Hayes in Will & Grace leading 40,000 men across the desert, think again. If you’re thinking Bruce Vilanch in hand-to-hand combat you’re deluded. If you’re thinking Michael Musto slitting his enemy’s throats with a nail file, stop thinking--please, you’re giving us a headache.

Instead, think Patton taking bubble baths, or McArthur in moo-moos, or Schwarzkopf with fag hags. If you locked Alexander in a room with these generals and threw in a knife, only Alexander would walk out without needing medical attention. And he’d walk out like Evita too: On the terrace, arms out-stretched, greeting the adoring crowds below.

A Snippet From The Book:
Alexander liked to shave his face. This shocked his countrymen, who almost to a man sported beards. Remember, the last of Cromagnon man had croaked, like, three weeks earlier. If the Greeks had been born just a few generations sooner they wouldn’t have been able to walk upright without dragging their knuckles across the ground.

Alexander rationalized his shaving as a combat advantage. If the enemy couldn’t grab you by the beard he’d have a harder time killing you. Historians have waved their bullshit detector over that one and can’t decide if they believe him. Let’s just say there’s a whole school of thought that says Alexander didn’t like hair on his face for the same reason Narcissus didn’t like ripples in the water—it got in the way of the view.

Upon seeing him fresh-shaven, lots of people raised their eyebrows, but nobody raised a stink. You just didn’t do that to the guy who kicked the world’s ass. In fact, Alexander started a craze and soon everyone was going bare faced. Philip, Alexander’s father, must have been spinning in his grave, seeing the army’s energy wasted on something as girlie as shaving. “Christ! What are we running, a spa?!” he would have bellowed. “What’s next, botox and chemical peels?!” Luckily, Christ hadn’t been born yet, so Philip hadn’t technically taken the Lord’s name in vain.

Dr. Arnett takes us on a wild, comedic ride through Alexander’s life—from his early childhood (Aristotle was one of his teachers) to his famous battles, to his 19-year relationship with his boyfriend Hephastion to his ultimate death. Get ready to meet Alexander the Fabulous--the man who went down on history and came up smiling.

Accurate and funny. A laugh with every page. William Amett did a great job bringing historical information with humour. If you are not gay this is a must read to learn much of the nomenclature of the gay world and if you are gay the way he put it together enforces much of what you know the gay verbiage to me

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2–In this sequel to The Gruffalo (Dial, 1999), the wide-eyed daughter of that story's title character decides to find the "Big Bad Mouse" that her father has told her so much about. "His eyes are like pools of terrible fire,/and his terrible whiskers are tougher than wire." With her stick doll tucked under her arm, the youngster enters the deep, dark woods and follows marks in the snow to snake, owl, and fox. When she finally finds a little mouse, she grabs him for a feast, but the clever creature tricks her into running away to the comfort of her sleeping father's arms. The full-color cartoons portray a suitably sympathetic child in the snow-filled woods. While children may appreciate the details (the stick doll, snake tracks in the snow, gruffalo child's cave drawings) in the art, lack of change from picture to picture and in perspective diminish its effectiveness. The plot, rhymes, and art are all slightly weaker than the original tale. Purchase this where the first book is popular.–Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha's Public Library, WI

Cute story, great for kids.
By Patrick T. Baggett
Review for Arabic version. I am not a native Arabic speaker, I am just reading for learning purposes. I can't comment on the exact quality of translation, but it appears to be good. Most of my review is from the perspective of a person who is learning Arabic as a second language.

The localization is pretty good, too. It's not a straight word-for-word translation -- it's more like the whole story was rewritten: it's all rhyming poetry, and uses different (more eastern) words for foods, e.g. kabab. The pages read right-to-left like they should and the images have been flipped to make it appear correct. Great quality job over all. It sounds pretty cute when read aloud. From a reading level perspective, it is a bit harder than some children's books, but not overly difficult (6-10 lines of poetry per page). Some some vowel markings are present on harder words.

I found the story to be very cute and would definitely read to kids. It shows that being clever can get you quite far. Just watch out for that غرفول in the forest!

A Lovely Little Book
By Violet
My two-year-old daughter loves The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child movies, as do I, so I decided to buy her the books. This book is great! It is a rhyming book with a great story involving a clever little mouse and a creature called a Gruffalo. It's fun to see how the mouse finds his way out of his dangerous situations through his cleverness. This book is great for toddler and older children. The illustrations are fun and so is the story. I don't have a single complaint. I wish there were more books available like this one. It is such fun. If you have solely read the books, I recommend the movies as well! The graphics are great and match the book, the narrator has a pleasant voice and the story is just like the book.

A Delightful Tale.
By Psyche
One of my friends recommended this book after she read one of my four-year-old son's stories. She thought he might like it and be able to relate to the mouse. She was very right. My son scares away scary monkeys and other terrifying creatures in his stories. He certainly can relate to this mouse.

I read that Julia Donaldson originally planned for the gruffalo to be a tiger, but had to create a gruffalo to fit her rhyming scheme. I am so glad that she did. The mystery of the gruffalo builds the suspense of this tale. This book pays homage to Sendak's "Where The Wild Things Are", but still stands easily on its own. The rhyme and meter are well done and the conclusion is quite satisfying.

The illustrations by Axel Scheffler also pay homage to Sendak, but they, again, stand very well on their own. All the expressions and emotions of the mouse are conveyed by the eyes, tail and arms -- everything else remains almost static. It is a very effective technique. The gruffalo is scary, but not too scary; he does look as if he might be tricked by a clever mouse.

All in all, I'm glad my friend recommended this book. It makes a delightful addition to my son's library.

impressive
By christiane
This book had a great impact on me in fact purchased it in French, the title was "une si jolie petite fille" in fact this was the second book book the author wrote, she revisted Mary Bell after se was released an wrote how she got her life on track again, the one I purchased on my Kindle was the Trials of Mary Bell, so I recommend to read both books, which explains how she was sexually abused by her mother.Other ladies of .my group also were very impressed, and by no means Mary Bell had a very difficult youth, by reading the 2 books you don’t give her credit for what she did but being so molested, and apart from the James Bulger murder not so many children under 10, commit this
horrendous assassinations.Excellent books the author did a great job and deeply went to the core of the subject and tried to understand what happened in
this girl’s mind, it is the mother who should have been on trial

IT'S ABOUT TIME WE ALL TOOK NOTICE OF WHY CHILDREN KILL
By A Customer
A VERY TALENTED, UNDERSTANDING, DEVOTED AND INTELLEGENT LADY, GITTA SERENY TACKLES THIS HORRIFIC REAL LIFE ACCOUNT OF A DISTURBED AND ABUSED CHILD. "CHILDREN ARE NOT EVIL" WAS THE MESSAGE THAT CAME ACROSS WHILST READING IT, AND I FEEL EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ AND UNDERSTAND WHY SOME CHILDREN CAN BE SO CRUEL, AND EVEN KILL. ARE THEY JUST SPOILED? AREN'T WE PLACING ENOUGH DISCIPLINE ONTO THEM? WELL NO. IT'S ALL A CRY FOR HELP AND FOR ONCE WE ALL NEED TO LISTEN. I KNOW WE ARE NOT PERFECT, BUT THERE IS ALOT I, AND OTHER PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN ABOUT THE SITUATION OF CHILD KILLERS. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK, IT WILL OPEN YOUR EYES.
