A most critical must read

Whether one is an actor, director, writer or teacher, Shurtleff's book is simply a critical must read. Shurtleff who spent many years as a top casting director possessed an absolute love for the brave souls who dare to place themselves on the stage. His ultimate legacy to his beloved craft is this indispensable "How To" bible.
Much has been written already about his twelve guideposts, and I have nothing new to add to those already glowing (and well deserved) comments. What I did find most illuminative and refreshing is his comments on how to behave at the job interview. It is in this chapter that this book becomes helpful to even the non actor. In this chapter/section, Shurtleff urges all people to realize that ultimately the pressure in the job interview is on the employer and that a good prospect will immediately put the interview board at ease. All too often actors become so self centered and fail to realize that their performance is really about their audience, not them. The same is true therefore of the job interview. It is about the employer, not the employee.
As a teacher, Audition has been most helpful to me as it has provided objective certainty to an area filled with far too many subjective judgements. In other words, Shurtleff has helped define the skills and tasks necessary to train actors in a manner that will help them transition successfully from the educational venue to the professional market. He has given us clear, active objectives to teach toward.
In Audition, Shurtleff articulates what constitutes good, effective acting. Once that becomes defined clearly, then success becomes not a nebulous ideal, but rather a concrete proposition.

It works. It creates actors. It simply works.

I had no acting experience. None. Not even in school plays.
I got into acting on a lark, as a hobby. I had been studying and auditioning for about three years with no success, and very little progress.
An instructor recommended this book. I read it, and then read it again. All of a sudden, things that had been drilled in my head during acting classes finally started to make sense. Within the following 6 months, my skills grew in a series of leaps, and I began booking at auditions. Not a lot, not yet. But the sudden increase in my abilities was astounding.
I am still not a great actor. But this book helped me get out of the "student" mode and into the "working" mode. Well worth it.

I've nearly worn my copy out with use!

This book is an INVALUABLE resource. And I'm not a traditional actor, I'm an opera singer. I had to read this for a class on (what else?) auditioning, and loved it so much that I finished it the first day of class. Shurtleff's 12 Guideposts, carefully applied to just about any performance (I use them for arias, art songs, etc), can help create something nuanced and fascinating. As if the guideposts weren't enough, Shurtleff gives wonderful ideas on the nitty-gritty of auditions (how to present your past experience, what to wear, etc). I just can't say enough good about this book. When I perform an operatic scene that I've run through the 12 guideposts, I get comments like, "You're a great actress! You really have a theatrical flair!" Boy, does that feel good. I'd give this thing six stars if I could. I hate to even tell other people about this book, because then everyone can gain my edge.

He reviews the characters of the AT (as the trail is called), from a pack of incompetent Boy Scouts to a perpetually lost geezer named Chicken John. Most amusing is his cranky, crude and inestimable companion, Katz, a reformed substance abuser who once had single-handedly "become, in effect, Iowa's drug culture." The uneasy but always entertaining relationship between Bryson and Katz keeps their walk interesting, even during the flat stretches. YA-Leisurely walks in the Cotswolds during a 20-year sojourn in England hardly prepared Bryson for the rigors of the Appalachian Trail. Nevertheless, he and his friend Katz, both 40-something couch potatoes, set out on a cold March morning to walk the 2000-mile trail from Georgia to Maine. Overweight and out of shape, Katz jettisoned many of his provisions on the first day out. The men were adopted by Mary Ellen, a know-it-all hiker eager to share her opinions about everything. They finally eluded her, encountered some congenial hikers, and after eight days of stumbling up and down mountains in the rain and mud, came to Gatlinburg, TN. Acknowledging they would never make it the whole way, they decided to skip the rest of the Smokies and head for the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia-by car. Late that summer, for their last hike, the pair attempted to hike the Hundred Mile Wilderness in Maine, near the trail's end. They got separated and Bryson spent a day and night searching for his friend. When they finally were reunited, "...we decided to leave the endless trail and stop pretending we were mountain men because we weren't." This often hilarious account of the foibles of two inept adventurers is sprinkled with fascinating details of the history of the AT, its wildlife, and tales of famous and not-so-famous hikers. In his more serious moments, Bryson argues for the protection of this fragile strip of wilderness. YAs who enjoy the outdoors, and especially those familiar with the AT, will find this travelogue both entertaining and insightful.

The Writer Did Not Even Hike The Trail

First of all, the whole premise of this book is false. The writer doesn't even finish the trail. He never even finishes the last segment of the trail. I kept reading and reading waiting for something to actually happen. Maybe a real adventure encountering wildlife or problems with equipment or weather. But, I remained disappointed. Don't get me wrong, Bryson is a very good writer. There is just nothing interesting in this book. He skips major portions of the trail (completing just over 1/3 of the whole thing), but claims on the very last page that he "hiked the Appalachian Trail." That takes some nerve to make a claim like that. Even most of what he actually trekked, he was simply transported there by his wife and picked up in the evenings. Kind of silly if you ask me.

It's worth your time.

Bill Brison’s memoirs of the Appalachion Mountain Trail walk that he of Hanover New Hampshire and a Sam Katz of Des Moines Iowa did in 1996-1997. Brison is a travel writer. He writes well and the book has a warmth that makes you want his book to go on and on. He has terrific humor of a sarcastic nature. He weaves into his narrative facts about the trail, the founders of the trial, how different hikers approach the hike (thru walkers, etc.), the gear, food and water required to walk the trail, the landscape, the mountains, rocks, trees, rivers, streams and lakes, fauna and flora, the dangers (bears, rattlesnakes, insects, poisonous plants, murders), the hardships, and the weather, the camp grounds and sheds, observations about other hikers, the National Parks, the local clubs that maintain the trail, persons and companies that have exploited the trees, animals, fish, and minerals, towns along the trail, roads, etc. He draws stark contrasts between the rustic trail and the concrete asphalt world on either side, and he gets you to see the rustic as preferable. The weakness of the book is Brison, at heart, a loner. I’d read his books, but I would not go out of my way to go on a hike with him (apparently not many of his friends or acquaintances did either, except for Katz and I would hike with Katz).

I found the book A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, a quick and easy read. Bill Bryson, is ambling around his New Hampshire home,when he comes across an entrance to the great Appalachian Trail, the world's longest hiking path. The trail is long-it stretches over 2100 miles from GA to Maine. Naturally, Bryson instantly decides that he wants to hike the whole way! Unfortunately, the only hiking partner he can find, is Stephen Katz, from Iowa,an old friend and long lost recovering alcoholic. Bryson and Katz go way back; they took a trek across Europe together,when they were fresh out of college-and drove each other insane! Having no other choice,however, Bryson meets up with the woefully out-of-shape Katz and hops on a midnight plane to GA. So, Bryson and Katz hit the trail. Although, Bryson enjoys the gruelling hike, Karz is less enthused to sweat it out everyday. After several bone-breaking weeks, they realize that they have barely scratched the surface of the great Appalachian Trail. It will be impossible to hike the entire way.
The plot takes an interesting twist, which I will leave,you,the reader to find out for yourself! Bryson writes in an easy, interesting manner and style and the ending is unexpected as well!

Review of Ernst Mach's "The Science of Mechanics"

I am continuing my quest to read the original papers and books of the great physicists. This was an essential part of that quest as Einstein was supposedly greatly influenced by Ernst Mach's ideas. I do not believe you will find direct links between this book and Einstein's relativity but Mach's ideas on relative motion are at least stated.

The contents did not disappoint me as this book is teaching physics through history. Ernst Mach took the historical records and accounts of the great discoveries and placed them within the historical context that they require for the true understanding of their scope. It attempts to give insights into the mental processes that these people had to go through and often gives a Mach-ian re-interpretation showing how physics teachers of his own day were devaluing the historical approach to the extent that the students were not getting all they needed for true understanding of the subject.

Mach's insights into Newton were different and made Newton "the man" more human than the 1 day sound byte delivered in most lectures today.

This is not Mach's "Science of Mechanics" as advertised. It is a scanned-in copy of the "Supplementary Volume" that came with the Third English edition of the work. Save your money.

Johnson seeks to fill this void by offering a comprehensive look at the development, beliefs, and practices of Candombl� and exploring its transformation from a secret society of slaves--hidden, persecuted, and marginalized--to a public religion that is very much a part of Brazilian culture. Johnson traces this historical shift and locates the turning point in the creation of Brazilian national identity and a public sphere in the first half of the twentieth century.
His major focus is on the ritual practice of secrecy in Candombl�. Like Vodou and Santeria and the African Yoruba religion from which they are descended, Candombl� features a hierarchic series of initiations, with increasing access to secret knowledge at each level. As Johnson shows, the nature and uses of secrecy evolved with the religion. First, secrecy was essential to a society that had to remain hidden from authorities. Later, when Candombl� became known and actively persecuted, its secrecy became a form of resistance as well as an exotic hidden power desired by elites. Finally, as Candombl� became a public religion and a vital part of Brazilian culture, the debate increasingly turned away from the secrets themselves and toward their possessors. It is speech about secrets, and not the content of those secrets, that is now most important in building status, legitimacy and power in Candombl�.
Offering many first hand accounts of the rites and rituals of contemporary Candombl�, this book provides insight into this influential but little-studied group, while at the same time making a valuable contribution to our understanding of the relationship between religion and society.

Although this book did include some worthy information on the Candomble subject, it entirety contained numerous lengthy definitions of what exactly a secret is, rather explore the subject any deeper. I personally was very disappointed with this author, gilding his lack of information contained in this book with an extensive vocabulary.

A wonderful addition to any library!!!

One of the best books that I could find in English on Candomble.
The book is an amazing piece of scholastic work conducted by a once relectant initiate of Nago-Ketu Nation and surveys the history, practices, theology, ritualism and cosmology of Candomble and the role of the Terreiro in historical and contemporary Brazilian society.
There are many things that I had issues with.....the title of the book being one of them.....but by far, it is the most substantial piece of work that has been published in English targeted in a non-sensationalist way for the non-brazilian public.
This thought provoking piece of work has led me to look internally and externally for answers to questions raised in this forum, and has also allowed me to formulate my own questions......
In any case, the book is worth adding to any library and especially of value to those individuals interested in African Based Diasporic religion/spirituality in Brazil.
