New Seeds of Contemplation, by Thomas Merton

New Seeds of Comtemplation is one of Thomas Merton's most widely read and best loved books. Christians and non-Christians alike have joined in praising it as a notable successor in the meditative tradition of St. John of the Cross, the Cloud of Unknowing, and the medieval mystics, while others have compared Merton's reflections to those of Thoreau. New Seeds of Contemplation seeks to awaken the dormant inner depths of the spirit so long neglected by Western culture, to nurture a deeply contemplative and mystical dimension in our lives.

Not the original
By Linny
This is not the original book published in the 60s. This book was rewritten in the 70s. If you want to read this book DO NOT read the Preface or the Author's Note. I found it very discouraging and negative towards the author and the book itself. Understandably the Church has tried to distance itself from Merton because he accepted other types of contemplation such as Buddhism and Hinduism in his later life and works. He was very vocal of social injustice. I would have like to have read it in its original form.

By Al Braidwood
No one finishes reading this book without undergoing a complete overhaul of his/her spiritual escutcheon. This is a truly inspired book and the reader is time and again faced with parts of his/her life that calls for redemption and restoration. The book is one of a kind. I have never felt more challenged.

Soak in the Brine!
By Book Glutton
I would say that is Merton's best work, which is basically Seeds of Contemplation updated. Merton also explains the reason for the update in the beginning. Written while in solitude, it reflects personal change that he had to deal with. As John Henry Newman said, "To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often." This, Merton had to do. This Merton suggests as the path for each of us. The book is a prayerful study about life and must be treated as such. Slowly, Merton instructs, clarifies and challenges us, chapter after chapter to focus on the real world we cannot see. He insists, "Every movement of my own natural appetite, even though my nature is good in itself, tends in one way or another to keep alive in me the illusion that is opposed to God's reality living within me." By themselves, the focus can only be on "the one I cannot be, the false-self in me, the person that God does not know." As the chapter heading says, we must "pray for our own discovery."

A great resource to accompany this book is given to us by James Finley, a former monk at Gethsemane at the time Merton was there, and from whom he received frequent Spiritual Direction. In his talks that come to us in the series, Thomas Merton's Path to the Palace of Nowhere, Finley gives first-hand knowledge of the value of Merton's instruction as well as a comprehensive plan and purpose of using such a book like this and the scope of what it entails, like a journal of thoughts: forming a meditative exercise taken from that which is derived from reading and reflecting on Merton’s words. What he's saying is: take a year to reflect on Merton's thought. Journal it as you go. Do it again the next year or so. Compare the journals and examine your new understanding derived from another reading. Keep doing this. You can spend a life-time with it! You can continue to grow with it! I believe the substance of what he offers here is found also in his book, Merton's Palace of Nowhere. I am not sure. I have bought the book, but have not spent much time with it yet.

Similarly, I mention that in the Introduction of the book Humility Of Heart by Father Cajetan Mary da Bergamo, it talks about the advantage of using any great book for two or three years as a meditation book. The human mind can be so distracted or unstable at times and can need more time than we imagine to be able to grasp great truths and ideas and integrate them practically into our everyday lives. The suggestion that two or three years spent with the works of a great Master, digesting it fully but little by little, should not seem out of the question. And so, I apply the advice given there to this work of Merton, that "We never get a proper hold of a great spiritual doctrine until we have lived in it and been saturated by it. The soul must soak in the brine until it has become wholly impregnated with its qualities." It is a good teaching from which we can all learn. Merton has provided the brine. We must soak in it.

In the Spiritual Life, the goal is always God: God possessing us and us possessing God. This means there's a lot in our lives that must undergo scrutiny. This means that there are things that should or must be eliminated. In the process, there are things that must be gained. This has to include sanctification, the path the saints travelled. Merton tells us, "for me, to be a saint is to be myself." That is a long path for most of us. Therefore, sanctity is "finding out who I am and of discovering my true self." So, to reach the point where we seek the ultimate goal of life, means to have or find and enter a complex path which Merton calls "Integrity" and explains, "In order to become myself I must cease to be what I always thought I wanted to be, and in order to find myself I must go out of myself, and in order to live I have to die," not much different from what Jesus tells us in the gospel, "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life?" (Mt 16:25-26). All of this takes time! We must give it the time it deserves. Merton will teach us, slowly! He will give us the principles we need to live this out. The most significant gem that I have found in this book is under the heading of "Mental Prayer." It's worth making a copy of the few pages and carrying around with us. It's food and instruction that we can never tire of receiving. It's something that, even when we are sure what he is saying there, it is worth going back to many times throughout the year.

Maybe two or three years are not enough! Maybe there are things that each of us can find in this great work that we must spend a life with! That's what Finley suggests!

Ho Chi Minh: The Missing Years 1919 - 1941, by Sophie Quinn-Judge

This book explores Ho's pre-power political career, from his emergence at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 to his organization of the Viet Minh united front at the start of the Second World War. Using previously untapped sources from Comintern and French intelligence archives, Sophie Quinn-Judge examines Ho's life in the light of two interconnecting themes--the origins and institutional development of the Indochinese Communist Party, and the impact on early Vietnamese communism of political developments in China and the Soviet Union.

An essential addition to Duiker and Marr.
By S. Darragh
Ho Chi Minh remains an enigmatic figure, in no small part because he planned it that way. Duiker's "(HCM)...A Life", Marr's "Vietnam 1945", and Bartholomew-Feis' "The OSS and Ho Chi Minh" have all stripped away some of the mystery, but blank spaces remain. Mrs. Quinn-Judge steps into the fray to drop some countervailing facts that challenge some of those author's judgments. One is left wondering if Ho Chi Minh was really a Communist Internationalist, or a Vietnamese Nationalist, or a man for all seasons, capable of telling everyone exactly what they wanted to hear. Her points are well made. Highly recommended for those interested enough to form their own judgments.

Brilliant archive work with an overdose of detail
By Joe6Pack
Impressive archive work with lots of original discoveries, which help to discern fact (to extent accessible and verifiable) from myths and fiction provided by Communist propaganda and his enemies alike. We witness a young emigre in Paris who in vain tried to interest the CPF in colonial issues of far away Indochina, his travails in Moscow where he thanks to his low profile and non-ideological stands survived Stalin's purges of the Trotskytes and foreign "agents", a year of monastic travels in Siam (where he was mostly sick with tuberculosis) and finally his labours in revolutionary China, surviving on revolutionary teaching and translation work for the Comintern. Most of the time he was treated as lowly revolutionary clerk, producing papers which nobody wanted to publish, and to beg for money from his masters in Moscow, who had other priorities (including their own survival) than helping in the preparation for revolution by a minuscule group of quarreling exiles in a far away peripheral country without apperantly any strategic importance. The only people interested in him were the agents of the Surete, who were after his head. He narrowly escaped thanks to the uncooperative sloppiness of the British authorities in HK. The archive work done in Moscow and France and the linguistic skills needed which went into this book are truely impressive. Yet there is an overdose of detail, the understandable wish to tell ALL, with dozens of unexplained Vietnamese names on each page (although there is in fairness a sketchy biographical annex for the most important ones). But does one really needs to know who was with whom in which short-term training course in Moscow or in Southern China in the 1930s? This goes on for pages....

Every baker NEEDS this book.
By Bill Anderson
I started a bakery/deli in 1993 using a professional baker and this book as my foundation. In time I also learned to use advice from my customers and from other pros. Still, the whole lot of the experts, save one, gave less useful information than did this classic by Joseph Amendola.
Theories of dough fermentation and the like are of especial importance for any new baker. When something goes wrong, too, this book has a good trouble-shooting section.
I heartily recommend this book to any baker, commercial or men and women trying to please their loved ones.
Other books you should add to the shelf are Professional Baking and Quantity Cooking.

Review
"Essential if you want to put your body back in tune with nature." * Daily Mail *

From the Publisher
Charles William Daniel (1871-1955) was a maverick free-thinker whose tiny publishing house had august links with many of the most influential thinkers and movements of the 20th century. To wit, copies of Daniel's books could be found in the library at Ghandi's ashram. This spirit lived on after his death, and the company maintained its niche by publishing definitive texts on a variety of spiritual and esoteric subjects. Many of these titles, notably those on Aromatherapy and Bach Flower remedies, have become standard works on the subject. When the C.W. Daniel list went looking for a new home, the Vermilion and Rider imprints were the natural place for this wonderful collection of authors.

This is a good and interesting book. However in the back of the book are dates/years that tell you what moon cycle you are in on any given day. The years only go through 2012. I'm now looking for one with current and future years but can't find one.

Warning for beginners
By An Amazon Customer
Well, I hate to be the lone voice of dissent here, but I have major reservations about this book, in terms of the title's target audience.

1). First, it should have been titled "Beginning Java for Programmers". I say this as, for example, Ch 2 problem 10 requires a nested for loop. This is NOT something I would expect a beginner programmer to know, especially only in chapter TWO! Also, p36 refers to being able to do "all the old char tricks you know".
2). Chapter 2 also talks about primitives, typecasting. Typecasting is not something a beginner needs to know at only chapter 2.
3). The editing is poor. Page 65 shows a sample program listing. Turns out this is a completely different program than the downloaded source files.
4). The author (&/or Oracle) should not expect a beginner to learn the command line straightaway from chapter one. I also have the book "Java for Dummies", which is able to explain how to use the Eclipse IDE. Why can't Oracle? This is lazy, IMO.

I am giving this 3 stars overall, with a caveat. This is a 4-5 star book for a programmer who already can figure out the nuances, or if the book's code is wrong, & knows how to use Eclipse. However, a 1 star book for a real beginner who doesn't know any language & the command line. It would be a nightmare for a true beginner.

Too big and at the same time too shallow for a reference
By Constantine Kulak
The first impression after reading this book for one day -- it is definitely not a complete reference. Many important points are covered too shallow.

For example, while discussing Properties, the author mentions that this API is sort of obsolete, but he doesn't mention Preferences. In fact, Preferences are not mentioned at all (at least I couldn't find it in the Index). Another example -- StringTokenizer class, for which the author dedicates two pages, but doesn't mention how it is different from String.split, e.g. from the performance point of view. There are javadocs for ArrayList, but it doesn't say how it grows and when it shrinks. I was unable to find some of the important contracts, e.g. what has the higher priority for a TreeSet -- Comparator's 0, or element's equals returning false? Those are rather trivial questions, naturally appearing while reading the book, but unfortunately you'll have to google for it. The author provides virtually no hints about the implementation of the library and the language, which I believe is essential for understanding most of the design decisions. This is absolutely unacceptable for a reference book.

There are two other annoying things:

1. The book is full of Javadocs, I would say 1/3 of the book is Oracle javadocs, which I personally find rather useless. It looks like something completely artificial, added just to extend this (already enormous) volume.
2. The book is very thick, while the binding and cover are very soft and unsubstantial. It had some signs of wear already after one day of reading! If you use this book regularly as a reference, it will wear out very soon.

Having said that, I must mention that some of the topics are covered well, concise and right to the point. For example, I like the way author incorporated new Java 8 language features throughout the whole book. For instance, you will find lambdas and new collection features used regularly in examples. In general, I've got an impression that "Java Language" section is written better than "The Java Library" one.

Finally, it is hard to understand the point of this book -- it is far too huge to be read linearly, and it is not deep enough to serve as a reference. Probably, the best uses for it would be to remind some of the core language and library concepts, and also to learn new features of Java 8.

Adrift programmer finds calling in Java!
By CLueLess HD
A little background:
Started programming as a child on my family's Mac IIGS. I enjoyed freaking my mom out when I would make the computer count forever via an infinate loop.
I self taught myself to program on my TI 83 in middle school, html and adobe photoshop in highschool, css in college, Perl for bioinformatics perposes.
Skip to now... realizing that somewhere along the line I forgot about my love to program so
I self taught myself begginers C++ using TheNewBoston's Youtube tutorial videos.
To sum it all up, I've a sporadic programming background... but nothing substantial in terms of profession/life goals..

Until this book.

This book teaches at the perfect speed, and provides examples in a logical "here is the newbie way that works... but here is a better way...and yet here is an even BETTER way!". So you learn in a very easy step by step way.

Treat this book as you would any math book, and work out EVERY SINGLE example, as well as try to work out what the console output would look like in your head or on paper and check it against the System.out provided (in the text)
And then, after a few chapters, go back and try to do the 'Try This' programs and retake the quizes to keep the info fresh, and see where your streths and weeknesses lie.

Other notes:
I use JavaFX (IntelliJ IDEA) because I plan to eventually make a GUI program.

I believe having a beginners knowledge in c++ has made me understand Java on a deeper level than those without. And this background has enabled me to learn Java faster and more efficiently.
If you have 2 weeks free, I suggest you look up TheNewBoston on youtube and watch his c++ videos at least up until #35 while you wait for this book to arrive, and you will have a better understanding when you start to read this book.

I am also following along with a free "First Course in Java" that is availble online from Berkley College. It's excellent & I highly recomend it!

Where I go from here:
1. Finish the book & Berkley Course homework/quizes
Study for OCA Java SE 7 Programmer I (Exam 1Z0-803) with:
2. (Liguori, Finegan) Oca Java Se 7 Programmer I Study Guide
3. (Sierra, Bates) OCA/OCP Java SE 7 Programmer I & II (Study vol 1 OCA of 2)
4. Take Exam 1Z0-803 to be Certified OCAJP 7
5.? Maybe...(Ganesh, Sharma) Oracle Certified Professional Java SE 7 Programmer Exams 1Z0-804 and 1Z0-805: A Comprehensive OCPJP 7 Certification Guide
6. (Sierra, Bates) OCA/OCP Java SE 7 Programmer I & II (Study vol 2 OCP of 2)
7. Take Exam 1Z0-804 to be Certified OCPJP 7

Hope this helps someone in finding their way, and good luck!

We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea (Godine Storytellers), by Arthur Ransome

For anyone who loves sailing and adventure, Arthur Ransome's classic Swallows and Amazons series stands alone. Originally published in the UK over a half century ago, these books are still eagerly read by children, despite their length and their decidedly British protagonists. We attribute their success to two facts: first, Ransome is a great storyteller and, second, he clearly writes from first-hand experience. Independence and initiative are qualities any child can understand and every volume in this collection celebrates these virtues.

In this seventh adventure (following Pigeon Post, winner of the Carnegie Medal), the Walker family has come to Harwich to wait for Commander Walker's return. As usual, the children can't stay away from boats, and this time they meet young Jim Brading, skipper of the well-found sloop Goblin. But fun turns to high drama when the anchor drags, and the four young sailors find themselves drifting out to sea sweeping across to Holland in the midst of a full gale! As in all of Ransome's books, the emphasis is on self-reliance, courage, and resourcefulness. We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea is a story to warm any mariner's heart. Full of nautical lore and adventure, it will appeal to young armchair sailors and seasoned sailors alike.

About the Author
ARTHUR RANSOME was born in Leeds in 1884. He had an adventurous life -- as a baby he was carried by his father to the top of the Old Man of Coniston, a peak that is 2,276 ft high! He went to Russia in 1913 to study folklore and in 1914, at the start of World War I he became a foreign correspondent for the "Daily News." In 1917 when the Russian Revolution began he became a journalist and was a special correspondent of the "Guardian." He played chess with Lenin and married Trotsky's personal secretary, Evgenia Petrovna Shelepina. On his return to England, he bought a cottage near Windermere in the Lake District and began writing children's stories. He published the first of his children's classics, the twelve Swallows and Amazons books, in 1930. In 1936 he won the first ever Carnegie Medal for his book, "Pigeon Post." He died in 1967.

A Children's book for Adults
By Franklin Hilliard
One one level, the Arthur Ransome books are about children, sailing and the idyllic summers in England in the 1930's. But on a more important level they're about responsibility; the responsibility to honor your commitments, to protect your siblings and to measure up. We Didn't Mean to go to Sea is the best of the lot; a story that starts easily and then builds slowly to a terrifying physical and mental ordeal. The last part, the return from Holland, is the best Father/Son scene you will ever read. I can't say enough about Ransome in general, or this book in particular. No, I can say one more thing. Don't start with this one; start with Swallows and Amazons. Start at the beginning. You'll get here eventually and you'll be really, really glad you did.

Another wonderful adventure!
By Bookaholic
Once again another great story. I think as I read it carefully this time I appreciate even more Ransome's technique of capturing the inner thoughts of the children. I've read it several times: as a child, to my children and now as I start to think about grandchildren.
The Walker children are growing up. John steps up to take responsibility and make hard decisions in this book and we realize it is nearly a year or two from university now. Responsible Susan makes her self sick with worry and I wonder if she has taken on too much responsibility over the years. Titty, once again, hovers between growing up and staying the child and takes the steps into maturity here. Roger has matured perhaps the most. He focused on the instructions about the boat engine and is a hero saving them from disaster while the gas holds out. Did Ransome develop the boys characters more as the storm clouds loomed in Europe? Are the girls roles less focused as war neared? I'd never noticed it before.
Any reviewer thought the trip home was poorly written and lost focus. It didn't for me. I felt the children each received the validation they deserved from their adventure and won't say more and spoil it for you.
It's the 7th in the series and I highly recommend reading them in order.

great book, great story
By David Binger
For my money, this is one of the great sailing stories of our times. It is beautifully written, as only the English can write, and tells a tale that is not only believable, but exciting as well. Five little kids cross the English Channel in a small sailboat, sailing it through a horrendous storm and avoiding deadly reefs and shoals. Because they are smart, determined not to give in, and know how to sail, they make it all the way to Holland from their home port in England. Superb!

Traffic Flow Dynamics: Data, Models and Simulation, by Martin Treiber, Arne Kesting

This textbook provides a comprehensive and instructive coverage of vehicular traffic flow dynamics and modeling. It makes this fascinating interdisciplinary topic, which to date was only documented in parts by specialized monographs, accessible to a broad readership. Numerous figures and problems with solutions help the reader to quickly understand and practice the presented concepts. This book is targeted at students of physics and traffic engineering and, more generally, also at students and professionals in computer science, mathematics, and interdisciplinary topics. It also offers material for project work in programming and simulation at college and university level.

The main part, after presenting different categories of traffic data, is devoted to a mathematical description of the dynamics of traffic flow, covering macroscopic models which describe traffic in terms of density, as well as microscopic many-particle models in which each particle corresponds to a vehicle and its driver.Focus chapters on traffic instabilities and model calibration/validation present these topics in a novel and systematic way. Finally, the theoretical framework is shown at work in selected applications such as traffic-state and travel-time estimation, intelligent transportation systems, traffic operations management, and a detailed physics-based model for fuel consumption and emissions.

From the reviews:

“Traffic Flow Dynamics is divided into three parts. The first part is devoted to discussing highway traffic data. … In the second part of the book, the authors describe almost all the important achievements in the field … . The final part of the book applies traffic-flow theory to solving traffic jams … . it will be a useful guide for students who want to make the jump into a fascinating area of research.” (Katsuhiro Nishinari, Physics Today, March, 2014)

Understandng traffic flow and especially traffic jams
By RGerm
While everybody experienced traffic jams, only few people are aware that they can be described with mathematical equations as though cars are physical particles. At least this is what the authors (who are physicists themselves) claim in their textbook. But is this really the case? By giving many real-world examples and devoting a whole part to empirical data, this book convinces me that this is true in most of the situations treated by the authors. It is particularly amazing that there are even some "traffic flow constants" such as a "jam propagation constant" stating that stop-and-go waves and other moving jam boundaries always move at the same velocity, namely about 15 km/h opposite to the traffic direction.

As the subtitle implies, this book consists of three parts. The first part covers all the usual data sources including the common stationary detector data but also different sorts of floating-car and trajectory data that become increasingly relevant in modern traffic technology.

The second and largest part covers most of the mathematical models of traffic flow: Microscopic models treating each vehicle-driver pair individually, and macroscopic models taking the notion "traffic flow" literally by introducing variables such as density, flux, or local speed. This part also includes directions of how to implement the models in simulators and gives hints on the best numerical methods and how to avoid numerical instabilities. Two big chapters focus on parameter estimation ("calibration and validation") and on traffic flow instabilities. The math in the latter is substantially more demanding than in the rest of this book.

The last part covers some applications: Traffic-state recognition, travel-time estimation, fuel consumption and emission modeling, and traffic flow optimization. I found the last two chapters particularly interesting: If you want to separate the truth from the myth behind several common fuel saving rules, the chapter on consumption modeling is for you. If you want to know why temporary speed limits at critical road sections help avoid breakdowns, you may turn to the chapter on optimization.

The mathematical requirements vary: While most of the chapters can be readily understood by undergraduates or even college students, the Chapters 9 ("macroscopic models with dynamic velocity") and 16 ("stability analysis") are heavy on math. In any case, the many solved problems dispersed throughout the book help the reader to learn more on this narrow but fascinating subject.

on traffic flow -- fun facts and the math behind
By Maier
The potential buyer should be aware that this book is on traffic *flow* models which is a different (and much more dynamic) approach compared to the more traditional "traffic models" such as the four-step scheme of classical urban transportation planning: If you want to know whether that new bridge will solve all traffic problems in your city, use the four-step scheme. If you want to learn the mechanisms behind stop-and-go traffic (and how to avoid it), be informed on the methods of real-time traffic-state recognition, or test whether the proposed new traffic-adaptive signal control scheme will work, use traffic flow simulation. The book covers most of the models used in today's simulation software.

There are several scientific books on traffic flow out there. Nevertheless, this book seems to be the only textbook on this (rather specialized) topic that is accessible to undergraduates (and even college) students doing traffic-related project work. A "unique selling point" are the many in-text boxes for testing the understanding and about 50 solved problems (the solutions section alone covers about 70 pages) which are particularly useful for this group of readers. Generally, the problems cover a wide range of difficulty. While some require solving differential equations or other advanced techniques, many others give amazing insights using remarkably little math: When being stuck in a traffic jam, would you like to know why the other lanes always tend to go faster, regardless of which lane you chose? The solution is in the book (p. 471).

At the end of each chapter, "Further Reading" blocks provide references to other work. Nevertheless, the sample of references is rather limited - at least compared to monographs of this size. For a textbook, I think this is OK, though.

Some "greener" topics which I find very interesting are only touched in this book: Pedestrians, non-motorized traffic in general, and also how to model consumptions and emissions of hybrid and all-electrical cars by physics-based load models. Finally, in the applications part, I miss a chapter on signal control: Testing new control algorithms - particularly the more advanced traffic-adaptive schemes - requires heavy use of microscopic simulations.

Great book for both theory and real life practices in transportation problems and operations.
By kukushkin
This is a great book for transportation operations. Thou there is almost no price difference between Kindle version and hard-copy. As an old-school person, I would rather pay more money to get the hard-copy version. The book is really extensive and has a lot of interesting examples. It is a good combination of theory, practice, simulation and data results and the questions/examples are very well up-to-date. However, you might find wrong correlations or equations etc. in the earlier versions. Thou the authors are very easy to reach and if you let them know of the wrong stuff in the book, they are very glad to correct.
