Peter J. Kreeft (Ph.D., Fordham University) is professor of philosophy at Boston College where he has taught since 1965. Socrates for the modern man

A entertaining and insightful take on how Socrtes would have interacted with the issues of today. Peter Kreeft lets Socrates's voice come through as he comments on morality, epistemology, drugs, happiness, capitalism and communism, education, and other topics. Written in the form of a Socratic dialogue, Kreeft effectively shows how philosophy and human reason gestures towards the truth revealed in Scripture. Ultimately, he also shows the shortcomings of human reason because it can only get us so far.

This is a great book for anyone studying Plato and Socrates, or who is interested in "natural law" approaches to life. It also provides helpful discussion points for popular issues of our day.

Good, but not Kreeft's best

As an aside, let me just say that reading the book recalled fond memories of my college and graduate school years, and even reminded me of some people I knew.

The premise of the book is contained in its title: What are "the best things in life?" The modern mind is exposed as one that is so introspective that it is oblivious to the workings of logic, reason, and basic self-understanding. Thus an irony is exposed, namely the inclination toward the self-delusional of the "me" generations.

Socrates' famous dictum: "the unexamined life isn't worth living," is the central tenet of the book. Two people closely evaluate their lives and realize that everything may not be as it seems.

The hopeful effect this will have on a reader is for he or she to turn and examine his or her own life. The book makes some interesting points, and is a "lighter" read than some of Kreeft's theological and philosophical treatises.

All in all, I like the book.

Excellent primer on philosophy!

What is the meaning of life? Should I go to college? What kind of job do I want? - These are the kinds of questions Kreeft (via Socrates) presents to the reader in his book. The dialogs are short, witty, and make excellent points. This book proves that Kreeft is a master of common sense and philosophy. This book would be perfect for mature high school students and any college student (and beyond college too). Of course, the focus of the book is on a question we hardly stop to think about as we trudge through life: What are we living for? Using "means" and "ends" Aristotelian principles, he does an excellent job of bringing about awareness of the Summum Bonum. It is a short and easy read that will challenge the way most Americans live.

This book is written those that have some experience with Windows server, and are looking to get current with Server 2016. I like how it is written as at an Systems Admin level,building on what you already know about Windows Server. It is well designed to give you the realistic approach to implementing Windows Server 2016 in your environment. Whether it be on premise or in the cloud, there are plenty of examples on how to take advantage of the new features, using the GUI or Powershell. This book is a very powerful tool. Essentially, it is a very broad index of all things that Window Server 2016 is capable of. One of the largest problems with system administration is needing to solve a problem and not knowing where to begin. This book accelerates the solution by laying out all of the operating system capabilities with just enough detail to enable you to make an informed decision about where to go next. The relevant sections even include web references for further information. Every cutting edge IT department should have copies of this book. A Great Resource

This is a must have book for anyone owning an HPX camera, but it also has valuable information regarding video recording systems and cameras in general. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because of the way the book is organized. It takes a bit of searching if you are trying to find information on a particular topic. I recommend reading it all the way through once, then going through it again with your camera in front of you to familiarize yourself with all the things your camera can do. If you own an HPX camera...you need this book!

About the Author
Junichiro Tanizaki was born in Tokyo in 1886 and lived in the city until the earthquake of 1923, when he moved to the Kyoto-Osaka region, the scene of one of his most well-known novels, The Makioka Sisters (1943-48). The author of over twenty books, including Naomi (1924), Some Prefer Nettles (1928), Arrowroot (1931), and A Portrait of Shunkin (1933), Tanizaki also published translations of the Japanese classic, The Tale of Genji in 1941, 1954, and 1965. Several of his novels, including Quicksand (1930), The Key (1956), and Diary of a Mad Old Man (1961) were made into movies. He was awarded Japan’s Imperial Prize in Literature in 1949, and in 1965 he became the first Japanese writer to be elected as an honorary member of the American Academy and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Tanizaki died in 1965.

Quiet but wonderful

Kaname and Misako are considering divorce. Misako has already taken a lover. Misako's father believes they are too attracted to being modern and reminds Kaname of the pleasures of tradition. TANIZAKI Junichiro's novel richly evokes 1920s Japan as well as the struggles of marriage.

SOME PREFER NETTLES is a quiet work. Things are said subtly, ironically, or not stated at all. It sometimes makes the novel hard to approach. But while it may seem too esoteric, it reinforces the domesticity of the setting. It's a very nice translation too, which keeps the language beautiful instead of ridiculous.

Generational conflict is universal. But rarely does culture change so rapidly as when Japan westernized. Kaname and his wife listen to jazz. Kaname and his father-in-law go to the bunraku theatre. The old versus new conflict is expressed by a culture few Americans are familiar with. I feel like Tanizaki does a good job of explaining the various arts in the novel, so that those who have no idea what bunraku is can still enjoy the story.

I enjoyed SOME PREFER NETTLES, although I'm sure by enjoyment was influenced by my interest in Japanese music and performing arts. But I think people truly enjoy Tanizaki's novel due to the rich emotions. While SOME PREFER NETTLES is quiet, it's never spare. It's full of lush imagery and harsh dilemmas.

Really a good book, interesting reading. I learned more about Japanese culture reading "Some Prefer Nettles." I haven't had occasion to read much Japanese literature. I will be looking for more books by Junichiro Tanizaki.

Lovely and strange. The pages of dialogue about the plots of Bunraku puppet theater are quite extraordinary. Not for those looking for a plot-heavy read, but the whole has a kind of static charge that I found to be hypnotic.
