About the Author
Scott F. Gilbert, the Howard A. Schneiderman Professor of Biology at Swarthmore College, teaches developmental biology, developmental genetics, and the history of biology. After receiving his B.A. from Wesleyan University, he pursued his graduate and postdoctoral research at The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Gilbert is the recipient of several awards, including the first Viktor Hamburger Award for excellence in developmental biology education, the 2004 Alexander Kowalevsky Prize for evolutionary developmental biology, an honorary degree from the University of Helsinki, and the Medal of François I from the Collège de France. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists. His research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and involves the developmental genetic mechanisms by which the turtle forms its shell.

Required Textbook for upper division biology class

I bought this textbook for my upper division college Developmental Biology class. I've only read the first 5 chapters of this book. I must say: the organization is pretty good, and it is fairly easy to read. I bought the loosed-leaf version at my school bookstore for $88 with tax and then returned it because Amazon is much cheaper AND this is the hardcover version. The pictures inside the book are really good and very high quality in this book. There is a summary section after every chapter, and this is helpful to brush up on the things that you just read. My professor just uses the figures for her lecture (I'm pretty sure that the company who owns this textbook allows you to buy PowerPoint versions of this book to present to students). The PowerPoint version contains all of the figures in the textbook, and my professor mainly tests us on the figures because they practically detail the entire chapter.

Pros: My favorite thing about this book is the Signaling Pathway section because not only do they provide a schematic picture of it, the textbook also has a simplified version (which is the part you will probably remember later on in life).

Cons: the book tries to add some humor. I don't think it's funny, and it doesn't help me remember. Luckily, these "opinions" are like 1 sentence every few pages, so it's not much. Maybe the humor might be enjoyable to others, this might help you remember. It didn't help me because I am really bad a reading comprehension so not much is funny to me.

After getting trapped into Wilt and Hake...

Wilt and Hake was the assigned text, and I felt obligated to read it... but that was a chore.

So I ordered Gilbert to help me read the "easy" book and it saved my grade hide. After struggling through that horrific mess of pondering verbiage, pedantic textual hectoring, and outright inaccuracies, this book rescued me and was... Fascinating. Helpful. Encouraging of a greater interest. Everything a great quality text book should do... this book did.

I would marry Scott Gilbert and bear his children if I weren't married and sterile.

THIS is what every textbook SHOULD be like.

Great overview of the subject

Its been 2 weeks into the semester, and I only have good things to say about this text.
The outline that Gilbert purposes for the subject is straightforward and quite helpful. Maybe its the nature of the subject or how Gilbert approaches Developmental Biology, but I appreciate how he writes a good amount about the historical details of previous experiments and scientist. It allows you to go on, in a sense, relive the journey to scientific progression. I also appreciate how Gilbert understands the value of diagrams and photos.
I agree with other reviews in how the textbook is more for the undergraduate level as opposed to the graduate level. However, this text does give the foundations for graduate level reading.

This is a re-named copy of an earlier work

Readers of Harold Hall will recognize the title "Lathework: A Complete Course (Workshop Practice)"

I was hesitant at first, but since I love to collect books on machining, I ordered it. Even though I also ordered the above book from Amazon, they didn't know or bother to warn me that this IS THE SAME BOOK with a different title!

Great book, but now I have two versions. This version has a more expensive binding with glossy pages, and was easier to read, but if you have the other, don't buy this one. To sell both of these as though they are different works demonstrates questionable ethics IMHO.

Very late update to this review: Mr. Hall happens to be on one of my online machinist's forums and he told me that a different publisher now owns this series of books and has chosen to release *all* of them with new covers and titles. He didn't have any say in the matter. So, a word to the wise, this warning actually applies to the whole series.

Better take a class first

I was expecting the book to start with an introduction to using the lathe but it seems to jump in assuming you've already taken classes and know what all the tools are. For example, it starts talking about the need for a rear tool post without explaining what it is or how it works (or why it makes it easier to make a certain type of cut). It's more a sequence of practice pieces than an instruction manual. I'm not used to reading technical plans and the photographs it uses are hard to make out.

Great tutorial manual!

The author takes you step-by-step through projects of increasing complexity.
Even better, you'll build tools you'll use in your shop, and use in the next project in the book.
Very good explanations of how to use the lathe. You will start out as a novice, and end up being a really good lathe operator by the end. The last project is really complex, but you will be able to tackle it, because of all the previous learning steps, AND all the cool tools you built.
Mr. Hall definitely knows what he's talking about. I hope he comes out with a Part 2 manual, just so I can makes some more cool tools.
I'm using an old Atlas 6" lathe, and had no idea you can do so much with a lathe. Thank you Mr. Hall.

Do not buy the 6th edition

There are a TON of typos in the 6th edition. The authors attempted to include step by step instructions for a newer sample database than the one used in previous versions, but they did not update all of the text to remove the references to the previous sample. If you're looking to use this as a step by step guide, avoid the 6th edition, you will not have the information you need to build a sample database to test what you've learned.

Would not recommend

It's been a while since I was needed SQL. I have a need now. I believe the book is well written, but I can't seem to find the support material, or what database I should be using to follow the book. Maybe I have just over looked it. Will keep it, but will look for another book to refresh my memory.

About the Author
Valerio Bozza is a researcher in the "E.R. Caianiello" Department of Physics at the University of Salerno, Italy. Dr. Bozza gained his doctorate from Salerno University in 2002 for a thesis on "Pre-Big Bang cosmology: initial conditions and brane-worlds" and subsequently undertook research at CERN’s TH Unit. His fields of interest include cosmology (string cosmology, bouncing cosmologies, cosmological perturbations, brane worlds, and transplanckian effects), gravitational lensing by black holes, and microlensing (the search for extrasolar planets, binary microlensing modeling, and microlenses surrounded by gas clouds). He is the author of more than 90 scientific publications.

Luigi Mancini works as a Research Staff Scientist in the Planet and Star Formation Department of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany. As a member of the HATSouth project team, his research is currently focused primarily on the search for extrasolar planets transiting nearby bright stars in the Southern Hemisphere. Dr. Mancini is also leading a project for accurate measurements of the properties of extrasolar planets via photometric observations and is involved in the GAPS (Characterizing the Global Architectures of Planetary Systems) project. He holds the Italian National Academic Qualification as an Associate Professor and is the author of approaching 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Alessandro Sozzetti is an astronomer at the Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino, INAF (National Institute for Astrophysics), Italy. He studied Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh in the USA. His main research interests include the search for and characterization of extrasolar planets, brown dwarfs, and planetary systems employing spectroscopic, photometric, and astrometric techniques and utilizing both ground-based and space-borne observatories; the formation and early evolution of stars and planets; and the characterization of planet host stars and their environment. He is the author of more than 120 scientific publications.

Best "relationship" book I've ever read

I have read books on codependence, anger management, you name it, but this book came into my hands thorough divine intervention (my 3-year-old grabbed it off the shelf at the library) and I took a chance on reading it. Let's just say I've read it multiple times and recommend it completely. Five enthusiastic stars.

About the Author
DR. JOSEPH D. STRAUBHAAR is the Amon G. Carter Centennial Professor of Communications in the Radio-TV-Film Department and Latino Media Studies Director in the Moody College of Communication of the University of Texas at Austin. He was the Director of the Center for Brazilian Studies within the Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies. His most recent book is Latin American Television Industries (2013), with John Sinclair. He has published books, articles, and essays on international communications, global media, digital inclusion, international telecommunications, Brazilian television, Latin American media, comparative analyses of new television technologies, media flow and culture, and other topics appearing in a number of journals, edited books, and elsewhere. His primary teaching, research, and writing interests are in global media, international communication and cultural theory, the digital divide in the U.S. and other countries, and global television studies. He does research in Latin America, Asia, and Africa, and has taken student groups to Latin America and Asia. He has presented seminars abroad on media research, television programming strategies, and telecommunications privatization. Robert Larose is a Full Professor in the Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media at Michigan State University and serves as director of the Media and Information Studies Ph.D. program. He won Outstanding Article Award for the year in the field of communication from the International Communication Association as well as the McQuail Award for the Best Article Advancing Communication Theory from Amsterdam School of Communication Research for his 2010 paper, "The Problem of Media Habits." Dr. Larose conducts research on the uses and effects of the Internet. He has published and presented numerous articles, essays, and book chapters on computer-mediated communication, social cognitive explanations of the Internet and its effects on behavior, understanding Internet usage, privacy, and more. In addition to his teaching and research, he is an avid watercolor painter and traveler. Lucinda D. Davenport is the Director of the School of Journalism at Michigan State University. I always expect textbooks to be dreadful and boring (in most cases, they are), but this one is easy reading, and it has a lot of useful and cool information. I actually enjoy studying for a test with this book. :)

Perfect.

Although this textbook was mandatory for my Media In Society class, it's a great way to learn about different media types and their affects on society. This is a wonderful textbook. It uses really current examples and teaches each media outlet first using chronological advancements then hits the more technical aspects. Really great for anyone looking to learn about media, communication studies, or even those just looking to learn more about technology.

Required text for an Intro to Mass Media college course. This is one of the better textbooks I've had to use. Great layout and hierarchy make readability and learning easier. Good book to buy even if not required and you want to learn more about media and communications.
