Very good advice on many subject presented in an interesting way
By Israel Drazin
This splendid, informative, picturesque book is by the author of other self help books, notably the well-accepted The Skinny On series, a group of books that offer advice on subjects such as success, persuasion, will power, and sales. This volume presents 125 ideas and skills, one lesson per page, on subjects that will help readers. Each lesson has a facing page that contains a funny picture highlighting the idea in the opposite page or a clever quote, such as: "Without promotion something terrible happens...nothing!" and "You never get a second chance to make a good first impression" and "Never forget to put your brain in gear before you put your mouth in motion" and "who are you going to believe...me, or your own eyes?"

Randel breaks up his lessons into nine topics such as communication skills, career advancement, financial literacy, investing, and personal development. Each topic has at least ten one-page discussions. For example, the section on personal development has twenty discussion/lessons that speak about subjects such as excuses, positive thinking, life isn't fair, willpower, improving memory, goals, fear, vocabulary, and integrity.

In "The Power of Positive Thinking" lesson, for example, he states that positive thing is a self-filling prophecy and he explains why by quoting Winston Churchill, Henry Ford, and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. He also says that positive thinking can be built over time, gives other ideas, and refers his reader to an on-line site to learn more.

In short, readers can learn a lot from this book and improve their lives.

How to be successful in life
By Margaret P.
Each of the 125 one-page chapters of "Street Smarts: Beyond the Diploma" gives a very accurate summary of an important yet basic idea. From the Rule of 72 and the basics of compound interest to punctuality and setting priorities, these are quick but crucial lessons in how to be successful in life.

What impresses me the most is that despite covering several wide-ranging topics, there is no misinformation here, as is so often the case with books full of advice. My only semi-criticism is that each idea is explored on one short page only. There are obvious advantages to the brevity: the most important points are emphasized and are easily digested. On the other hand, more information is needed to truly understand many of the ideas, such as investing in stocks or real estate. Many books have been written about most of the subjects and the bibliography lists the best sources if a particular chapter provokes further investigation.

"Street Smarts" was written for young people and makes a great graduation gift but would be useful to anyone. Even someone familiar with every idea it contains would find it to be a good review. A suggestion would be to read one chapter every morning to give the mind something to ponder.

I very highly recommend "Street Smarts" and wish that it had been available when I was young. Even finding just one helpful idea here would repay the time it takes to read this book many times over--and it would be hard to find just one.

125 Short Lessons
By A dad
There are a lot of ways we try to remember and pass on the lessons of life. One of these is to cite quotes from famous people and authors. When you open the book, Street Smarts, you will find one of these quotes on each left page. On the right page you'll find a one-page lesson on a variety of subjects.

Much of the book was helpful for reminding me what I already knew or heard about from other sources on advice. I appreciate this because it helps me when I'm reminded on such things. It's amazing to me how much time I spend consuming new information and not reviewing what I'd already learned.

A lot of the material was new to me although it might not be new to others. For example, one lesson is called, "You Can Never Have Enough Social Capital." I hadn't really thought of this idea of social capital in the way it is presented in this lesson. Other lessons are immediately practical such as the one about what to do if you're arrested. I think almost everyone can learn new things from this book.

This is the kind of book that I think one refers to now and then over a period of years. I got the idea to make notes in the book, which has plenty of open space to do so, to make sure I understand and remember the 125 lessons. I recommend this book especially for somebody that will take an active role in responding to the content.
